THE OUTPOST #2

The Outpost from Beirut comes with a brilliant second issue. They were nominated for Magpile's Best New Magazine and Best Magazine Design awards. They call themselves a magazine of possibilities.

This issue is about the possibilities of living in the Middle East. 'World Makers bending, breaking and making the rules of a new Arab World'.
The Outpost divides it's articles in What's Happening? and What Could Happen? You'll find articles on Syrian theatre in a time of war, the young generation of Baghdad building up the city with a movement called Fikra Space. There's an interesting article on transsexuality in the Arab Region, one of the biggest tabboos there, some transgender people are forced to live as refugees abroad. Also in issue two the abandoned buildings of Beirut and beautiful pictures of Villa Casdagli in Cairo.

The Outpost is one of the most important publications about the Middle East, made by a new, young  independent group of journalists.
We interviewed editor in chief Ibrahim Nehme when the first issue came out, that's here. 
He also talks about the new movement of magazine makers coming from Dubai and Beirut at the moment.

DINER JOURNAL

DINER JOURNAL comes to us from Brooklyn, New York. This is another great food magazine that came to the store and into our top 10 of the best culinary magazines.
The good thing about DINER is that it's full of recipes. They interview people, chefs, hunters or culinary specialists and there are stories but their main thing is the recipe.
Browsing through the heavily illustrated pages you find recipes for delicious meals.
Moose hunter Gote Blomgren from Sweden is interviewed about his carreer and shares his favourite moose dishes like moose stew and frozen lump.
Also in this issue goose meatballs, lemon potatoes, pear jam, beer braised rabbit, roasted oyster, pickled cauliflower.

VOGUE AT LARGE: MAXIMA !

Recensie: Koningin 

in het Dolfinarium

8 mei 2013 De dag na de kroning van Willem-Alexander presenteerde de Vogue Nederland 
haar eerste special edition, Máxima, The Birth of a Queen. Het ene vernederlandste importproduct eert het andere. ‘Daar staat ze, onze nieuwe koningin die, zoals de 
nieuwe koning zegt, ons land heeft omarmd,’ luidt een kop op pagina 112. 
Zij omarmt ons, Vogue omarmt haar. Vanaf dag één had Máxima het 
hart van hoofdredacteur Karin Swerink veroverd.
Dat is verbazingwekkend noch onhandig, want koninklijk en haute couture 
gaan goed samen: ze komt beter tot haar recht op de cover van de  
Vogue dan die van de Story. Door kelli van der waals.

Modern sprookje

De special is een rijk geïllustreerd scrapbook van Máxima’s leven. Met weetjes over haar jeugd; tips en info over Buenos Aires en New York, waar ze eerder woonde; de ontwerpers die haar aankleedden; en de jurken die ze droeg. Zes topontwerpers tekenden hun gedroomde outfit voor de nieuwe vorstin. En er staat te lezen hoe het burgermeisje een koningin werd. Dat wordt hier en daar sterk geromantiseerd: zo zou Máxima op haar dure tweetalige school hebben willen verbergen dat ze niet dagelijks lunch kon kopen, door picknicks op het gras te organiseren. Een beetje ongeloofwaardig als je in de volgende zinnen leest dat ze in de zomer polo speelde en haar familie een aantal paarden bij haar buitenhuis had.
Hoe dan ook, Máxima’s leven leest als een modern sprookje. Een gelukkige jeugd in tangodansend Argentinië. Sex and, of in ieder geval the City toen ze bij verschillende banken werkte in New York. En nog voordat ze de leeftijd bereikte waarop ze waarschijnlijk liever niet meer single had willen zijn, werd er een echte prins verliefd op haar. Vogue vertelt je wat er gebeurde toen de telefoon in Rio de Janeiro rinkelde (Máxima werd ontdekt door de pers) en toen een deurbel in de Beemster ging (de bandoneonist die de prinses deed huilen op haar bruiloft werd geboekt). Alles gepaard met veel ooggeknipper en een hoop tranen.

UPPERCASE 17 !! a scratch and sniff cover !

The spring issue of one of our favorite publications, Uppercase Magazine is all about paper goods and stationery. In this special stationery issue, they are profiling Rosanna and Joel Kvernmo of Iron Curtain Press before they make their way to the National Stationery show.

Inspired by the paper goods professionals—the illustrators, designers and entrepreneurs who have turned their passion into a career, issue 17 of Uppercase invites stationery and paper goods companies both big and (mostly) small to submit their work for inclusion in The UPPERCASE Stationery Guide. With 50 company profiles and Top Ten Tips from the industry leaders, Uppercase brings you this celebration of print and paper.

 

Other loose themes explored in gathering content for this spring issue were interpretations of fragility, transparency and ephemerality. From the fleeting beauty of scent to the delicate mechanics of a butterfly wing to the wondrous properties of glass, we learn that things that might appear breakable or temporary are in fact powerfully enduring.

APOLOGY - the first issue

Apology is a new magazine of art, fiction, games, humor, essays, interviews, journalism and photography. 

After working at hipster bibles like Index and Vice, journalist Jesse Pearson, 37, has launched Apology—a smart quarterly of literature, reportage, art, and humour—this month. Pearson says the publication is a rectification of sorts for his youthful transgressions — a reference perhaps to Vice’s infamous interviews with nubile nude girls, among other controversial pieces. Apology’s cool-kid photography by Ryan McGinley and Roe Ethridge, and humorous riffs by Lesley Arfin and Chelsea Peretti, will be supplemented by such features as a lengthy discussion on the semicolon, an endangered animal and a revealing visit with poetry’s éminence grise John Ashbery.

Duizenden boeken zijn er geschreven over de Duitse bezetting van Nederland tussen 1940 en 1945. Collaboratie, verzet, vervolging, de hongerwinter, geallieerde strijd op Nederlandse bodem en bevrijding, komen daarin gedetailleerd aan de orde. Toch is er in die literatuur een onderbelicht aspect: hoe verging het Nederlandse huisdieren in die jaren, met name de poes? Parooljournalist Paul Arnoldussen dook in de levensomstandigheden van poezen tijdens de bezetting. In zijn studie Poes in verdrukking en verzet 1940-1945 - tevens De Poezenkrant 57 - speurt hij naar die leemte in de geschiedschrijving over de bezetting. Door martin smit.

     Over het lot van huisdieren tijdens de bezetting is weinig bekend. In literatuur over die tijd is daarover niets of nauwelijks iets terug te vinden. In archieven van instanties als de Dierenbescherming of de Sophia-Vereeniging tot bescherming van dieren, nog minder. Paul Arnoldussen - wekelijks vult hij in Het Parool een pagina met Amsterdamse historische onderwerpen - verdiepte zich in het lot en de rol van poezen tijdens die donkere jaren.
Harde cijfers over poezen in oorlogstijd heeft hij niet boven water kunnen halen, zo erkent hij. Maar uit mondeling overgeleverde verhalen, fragmenten uit de literatuur, en vooral uit kranten uit de oorlogsperiode, weet hij een representatief beeld te schetsen van de poes in oorlogstijd. Tegelijkertijd geeft hij een onthutsend beeld van een opmerkelijke tweeslachtigheid in de samenleving: terwijl duizenden Nederlandse Joden werden afgevoerd, hield menigeen de dierenliefde hoog in het vaandel.
